The Joy of Early Summer Cooking: Light, Fresh Dishes to Welcome the Sun

As the days last and the air carries that unmistakable hint of warmth, we welcome early summer with open arms and, of course, open kitchens. There is something uniquely joyful about this time of year – the light changes, gardens bloom in earnest, and the arrival of fresh, vibrant produce invites us to cook differently. Early summer is all about embracing the natural rhythm of the season and allowing beautiful ingredients to speak for themselves. At Sophie Grey, our approach to cooking has always been guided by the seasons, and early summer is one of the most inspiring times of the culinary calendar.

My journey with food began in film and fashion, catering to teams who valued quality and consistency above all else. That experience taught me the importance of great cooking and hospitality and how to make both feel effortless. In 2009, I opened the Crazy Baker café in Kensal Rise, and from there, things began to grow naturally. What started as a small team in a vibrant neighbourhood soon evolved into something much larger: a dedicated kitchen of cooks and bakers, all with a shared passion for doing things properly.

Now, working from a purpose-built kitchen near Bruton, Somerset, I focus on private and commercial catering andhosting bespoke cookery experiences for individuals and small groups. My philosophy remains the same: cook with care, use the best seasonal ingredients, and make every dish a celebration of flavour and simplicity.

There is a distinct shift in the air come early summer – a sense of newness, of lightness. This is reflected in the ingredients that arrive at this time of year: tender asparagus, sharp rhubarb, sweet peas, fragrant herbs, and the first of the strawberries, perfectly juicy and ready to enjoy simply, just as they are.

Early summer cooking lends itself to a lighter touch. Gone are the slow-cooked stews and heavy bakes of winter; in their place come crisp salads, grilled vegetables, gently roasted fish, and desserts that make the most of the fruit bowl. At Sophie Grey, we love creating dishes that let these ingredients shine. It’s not about overcomplicating things—it’s about understanding the ingredients, treating them with respect, and bringing them together in an effortless and delicious way.

One of the most rewarding parts of our work is welcoming guests into our kitchen. Our bespoke cookery experiences are designed to inspire and connect people with the joy of cooking. Whether a one-on-one session or a small group gathering, these experiences are personal, relaxed, and rooted in seasonality. No two days are the same, but the core idea is always to cook together, learn something new, and enjoy the process as much as the final plate.

Early summer is a wonderful time to join us for a cookery experience. The produce is abundant and full of life, offering endless possibilities. Guests might find themselves making a simple tart filled with new-season fruit or learning how to prepare vegetables in a way that brings out their natural sweetness and crunch. The aim is always to demystify the kitchen—to show that cooking can be joyful, intuitive, and deeply satisfying.

Great food begins with great ingredients, and our kitchen is guided by what’s growing in the fields, gardens, and hedgerows around us. We’re fortunate to be based in the countryside, where produce is never far away, and seasonality is a way of life. This connection to the land shapes every menu we create – whether catering for a celebration, a brand shoot, or preparing a simple lunch for friends.

When cooking for clients, we bring the same care and attention to every event, big or small. From freshly made breads to beautiful salads, from delicate pastries to warm, rustic mains, everything is made by hand by people who care about what they do. And when the sun is shining and the table is set outside, there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing guests enjoy a meal that feels perfectly of the moment.

The arrival of early summer is a moment to savour. It’s a time for slowing down, spending more time outdoors, and reconnecting with the pleasures of good food. At Sophie Grey, we believe that cooking should reflect the season you’re in—not just in the ingredients you use but in the way it makes you feel—light, fresh, joyful.

Whether picking herbs from the garden, baking a cake with the first crop of rhubarb, or learning something new in the kitchen with us, early summer offers so many ways to fall in love with food again. We hope you’ll find inspiration in the season – and that, like us, you’ll welcome the sun with open arms and something delicious on your plate.
